A miasm is an inherited propensity for a subtle disease state with characteristic state of mind and physical symptoms. We all manifest them to a greater or lesser degree. They are present, often in a subdued state, but may manifest as an acute expression. We are aware of seven miasms - Psora, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Ringworm, Sycosis, Cancer, Syphilis. Research continues in this field.

Miasms are inherited chronic diseases that give rise to most other chronic conditions. To identify the deeper roots of disease, we look beyond life experience into the inheritance of each person. Traumatic events may trigger a flare-up of deep latent disease, resulting in a symptomatic condition. The miasms pre-dispose us to manifest disease in a way specific to our make-up and family history.

We use remedies following a specific protocol to remove the inherited miasms. We treat them in the above sequence with appropriate remedies, after all timeline traumas have been addressed, except where one is manifesting acutely.

Clearing the miasms is a main focal points of Heilkunst treatment because their strong influence on our state. They result in physical and mental-emotional weakness that eventually cause us to fall ill.

Psora (Psorinum) is the oldest infectious disease known. It first appeared as scabies or "the itch" - a contagious skin disease. Psora induces in us a state of dryness, under-functioning (the "hypo-" conditions), and lack - whether of hydration, stamina, money, or love. Poverty consciousness on all levels has its source in psora.

Physically, it manifests in dryness, generalized pains and skin rashes, and lung irritation. Most chronic diseases derive from Psora.

Its influence can be felt most strongly in the autumn when life starts closing in and preparing for winter. You may feel a bit depressed or tired as the days grow shorter. This may to a typical disgruntlement as the unceasing requirements of daily life oppose our need to retreat and rest.

Malaria (Malaria) is based on the malaria disease. It follows psora closely and is characterized with sudden deep chills and prostration (resembling the malaria attack).

You may feel wronged or persecuted by others or by circumstance. And you may be deeply tired, even debilitated, usually towards the end of the day.

Tuberculosis (Tuberculinum) shares many characteristics with the disease of the same name. It is heralded in early winter by tension and excitability, often combined with great prostration and fatigue.

You may have a sudden desire for change - an urge to travel, buy new things, re-arrange furniture. Its a feeling that all would be better (and it temporarily is) if only you could change this or that in your life.

Many respiratory afflictions begin at this time of year and are typical of the tubercular miasm, from cough and cold to bronchitis and pneumonia.

Ringworm (Ringworm) In the early months of the year ringworm can show itself in skin conditions, especially fungal. Ringworm (tinea) itself may appear at this time on the skin.

This is linked with symptoms of SAD and depression. You may be tired, have a dull headache and not want to do anything. You may continue out of duty, causing frustration and self-blame.

Sycosis (Medorrhinum) This miasm arose from gonorrhoea. The name derives from the Greek ‘wart disease’, after one of its main characteristics.

Its main expression is excess in all areas. You may have an increased appetite for food, excitement, action - ‘sex, drugs and rock-‘n’-roll’.

Sycosis is the root of most "-itis" diseases, with inflammation and copious discharge. Memory problems and slowness are typical. You feel stupid and are quite sensitive about it.

Sycosis is associated with spring - a time of rapid growth, expansion, and rebirth.

Cancer (Carcinocin) Due to its increasing prevalence, cancer is now well entrenched as a hereditary disease as well. In miasm treatment, we are regarding it first as a state of mind, rather than neoplastic growth.

One of the most emotional and deeply suppressed states, it is characterized as "the life not lived". Cancer can express as a cancerous tumour, but we find it more often in a state of mind where people tend to care for others but not themselves.

It is felt most strongly in late spring. You may experience introspection, tentativeness and insecurity, with a focus on family, emotional ties and relationship. And you may be sensitive, touchy and prone to deep re-evaluation.

Clearing this miasm helps focus you attention on yourself with a view to your true nature and what is best for you.

Syphilis (Syphilinum) This miasm has its roots in the syphilis disease. It is the most destructive of all miasms, and may show up in physical deformity (in the spine, teeth, or organs), congenital disorder, ulceration, or auto-immune disease.

On the mental level you see a split in your self, a sense of disconnection from your body. Mental states like manic depression, schizophrenia and addictive behaviour with strong self-destructive tendencies derive from this miasm.

It is most evident at summer’s end, the period of lush growth, overgrowth and decay. There is a characteristic theme of overdoing it, to the state of destruction.

Lyme (Lyme) The Lyme miasm has its roots in the complex that was discerned in Lyme, Connecticut in the 1970’s. That affliction was closely associated with the Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete, but actually includes a whole gamut of co-infections. Similarly, the Lyme miasm has a plethora of facets and symptoms. It is the final dissolution of order after the explosive, destructive action of Syphilis.

Lyme carries the sense of the hermit - the person who feels under siege from the world and retreats to the cave - for safety and to pursue his own interests.
